Early 20th century Pierrot figural bookends featuring the classic melancholy clown seated while playing a lute. The figures combine dark spelter bodies with expressive ivory toned celluloid faces and hands, creating a striking theatrical contrast typical of decorative objects from the period. Marked Made in Japan to the underside. The romantic Pierrot character, drawn from commedia dellÕarte, became a popular motif in early 20th century decorative arts and lends these bookends a whimsical, slightly poetic presence on a desk or bookshelf.
As a two piece set, each figure measures approximately 7.5" H x 3" W x 3" D.
