Charming English stoneware smoking set, early 20th century, comprised of a large tobacco jar and companion match holder/striker. The jar features a textured salt-glazed body with smooth glazed collar, while the smaller piece is decorated with a colorful heraldic crest bearing a lion and shield, evocative of Oxford University souvenir ware. Rich two-tone finish with warm patina throughout. Both pieces marked on underside. Tobacco jar 6.25"H x 5.5"W. Match holder 3"H x 2.25"W. Crest is for Balliol College at Oxford University, designed by Albert Henry Warren and published in Oxford, by T. and G. Shrimpton in 1869.
