Mid-19th century English Staffordshire figure of a seated rough-coat poodle with her two pups, modeled in classic red and white glaze with expressive hand-painted features and a deep cobalt base. Mother-and-pup groups were especially popular during the Victorian period, symbolizing loyalty, protection, and domestic devotion. The textured coat, compact scale, and bold base give this example strong visual presence despite its smaller height.

Staffordshire dogs are what started one of our lifelong obsessions. Their popularity traces directly to Queen Victoria’s devotion to her beloved spaniel, Dash, helping cement these figures as symbols of loyalty and refinement on Victorian mantelpieces. They remain one of our favorite things to hunt for in our travels, each pair carrying its own character and charm.
