An extraordinary 19th-century English majolica game tureen, crafted in classic trompe l’oeil style to mimic a small game bird nestled in a bed of foliage. Richly glazed in naturalistic tones, the lid and body are sculpted in dimensional relief, creating the illusion of a true woodland tableau. These striking vessels were traditionally used for serving game pies or stews—cooked in the hearth and presented directly at table in dishes as beautiful as the meal itself.
Unmarked, as is common with early majolica, though the color palette and craftsmanship are reminiscent of Minton or Wedgwood from the same period.
A rare and captivating piece of Victorian tableware, ideal for collectors, display, or as a statement addition to a traditional holiday spread.
