Antique English majolica game dish with heavy trompe l'oeil style lid and body. Trompe l'oeil is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. The tureen depicts a small, quail like bird laying in a basket of foliage. These tureens were traditionally used to serve a game pie or stew. Cooked in the hearth / oven, and presented to the table in this beautiful serving dish. As with most early majolica, there is not a maker's mark. However, It is of the quality and coloring of Wedgwood or Minton's pieces from this same time period.
