Early 20th century English trophy beaker engraved ÒAltrincham Championship Dog Show.Ó Pieces of this form were commonly produced in Sheffield, the historic center of British silver and silverplate manufacturing. The simple cylindrical beaker shape and straightforward engraved lettering are typical of utilitarian sporting trophies from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Altrincham, located in Greater Manchester, hosted a number of regional dog shows during the early 20th century when pedigree breeding and competitive dog exhibitions were hugely popular across Britain. Trophies like this were awarded at local championship events and often saw years of polishing and handling by their proud recipients.
The silverplate has been polished over time to the point where the warm copper substrate beneath is now visible in places, creating a naturally aged two tone surface that many collectors find particularly appealing.
