19th-C. Whimsical Majolica Frog Smoker (Ashtray)
19th-C. Whimsical Majolica Frog Smoker (Ashtray)
This whimsical 19th-century majolica smoker features an anthropomorphic frog, impeccably dressed and puffing on a pipe, a playful nod to the smoking culture of the era. From the late 1800s to early 1900s, figural smokers like this were the pinnacle of creativity for European potters, particularly in Germany, France, and Austria. Designed to entertain, these smokers concealed an ashtray at the base, with smoke cleverly escaping through the figure's mouth, mimicking an exhaling smoker. Exceptionally rare today, these pieces have become sought-after artifacts of a bygone smoking culture, made even more valuable by the taboo of smoking in modern society. Signed on the bottom, it appears to be French.
