A commanding mid-19th century Victorian English Staffordshire “Lion Dog” King Charles Spaniel, dating to circa 1860. The term “Lion Dog” appears in Staffordshire guide literature to describe this stylized interpretation, where the coat is rendered in deeply molded waves that evoke a lion’s mane.

Among the more sculptural and highly sought-after Staffordshire forms, this example is boldly modeled with elongated, mane-like fur, a proud upright posture, and a heightened, almost heraldic expression. The facial features are deliberately expressive, with surviving gilt accents that once caught the glow of candlelight on a Victorian mantel.

Their popularity traces directly to Queen Victoria’s devotion to her beloved spaniel, Dash, helping cement these figures as symbols of loyalty and refinement on Victorian mantelpieces.
