Marius Hammer of Bergen was one of Norway’s most celebrated 19th-century silversmiths, known for reviving historic Norwegian motifs in richly detailed silverwork. This exceptional salt and pepper set, dating to the 1880s–1890s, reflects that legacy beautifully.

The domed lids are crowned with embossed foliate wreaths encircling Danish Shilling coins, guarded by cast lions — a powerful nod to Scandinavian heraldry and national romanticism of the period. The bodies are wrapped in intricate foliate arcading and raised on three sculptural lions, giving the pair architectural presence despite their intimate scale. The pepper retains its original gold-washed interior, a refined detail both practical and luxurious.
