Antique Staffordshire figure portraying Isaac A. Van Amburgh (1808 - 1865), he was a famous animal trainer in the early 19th century. He often performed with lions, tigers and a panther. His act was a popular entertainment in theatres and in the circus. Most Staffordshire figures made from 1740 to the early 1900s were produced by small potteries and makers' marks are generally absent.
